Creating a CNAME record for any of the domain names or subdomains you have within a hosting account will permit you to point it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain name will lose all its records - A, MX etc, and will take the records of the domain name it is being redirected to. In this light, you cannot set up a CNAME record to forward your domain to a third-party provider and keep a working email service with the first hosting provider. It's also very important to know that a CNAME record is always a string of words rather than a number because it is frequently confused with the A record of the domain name being redirected. One of the primary uses of a CNAME record is to direct a domain you own through one company to the servers of some other company in case you have set up a website with the latter. This way, the website will appear under your own domain address, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party company.

CNAME Records in Shared Hosting

Creating a CNAME record through our shared hosting is quite easy. Our in-house built Hepsia CP has a section devoted to the DNS records of your domains, so you can create a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted within your account in only a few simple steps. You will find a video tutorial in the same section where you can see the process first-hand. This feature offers you a number of options - if you build a company website on our end, as an illustration, the workers can use their e-mails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you wish to create a site by using a different provider which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, if you have an on-line store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you'll be able to set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and direct it to the main domain, so all your clients are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Managing DNS records usually appears to be a hard task to people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting CP, which comes with every single semi-dedicated server which we offer, is extremely simple to use. If you want to create a CNAME record for any purpose, all you have to do will be to select the domain address or subdomain that you need, select the type of record, that will be CNAME in this case, then type the value i.e. the domain address or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is very simple and you can set up the record in the DNS Records section of the CP. Within the hour the new record will be fully active and within a few hours it will propagate around the world. If you are not sure what you should do, we have prepared a detailed help article and a short video tutorial on how to go about creating a CNAME record and they are both located within that same section of Hepsia. Naturally, you can also get in touch with us for help at any time.
